President Donald Trump attended the FIFA Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, marking the one-year anniversary of a failed assassination attempt on his life. The event took place in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Trump joined Chelsea players to congratulate them on their victory.
Trump, accompanied by his wife Melania, arrived at MetLife Stadium, where he met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other guests, including Attorney General Pam Bondi and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. He also presented PSG players with runner-up medals and handed over the championship trophy to Chelsea.
The match itself saw Chelsea dominate Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the first half, with goals from Cole Palmer and João Pedro. Trump was shown on the stadium’s mega-screen, prompting a smattering of boos from the crowd.
Trump also used the event to discuss international matters, including Gaza ceasefire negotiations and Qatari government officials. His envoy Steve Witkoff remained “hopeful” about the prospects of a Gaza ceasefire.
The event comes as tensions between the US and its neighbors are on the rise due to proposed tariffs, immigration, and Trump’s comments suggesting Canada could become the 51st state. Despite this, Trump remains optimistic about the World Cup tournament next year, which will be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
