Janet Petro has been serving as the Director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center since June 2021. Recently, she was named acting NASA Administrator by the Trump Administration. President Trump announced his intention to nominate private astronaut and tech billionaire Jared Isaacman as his permanent pick for the next NASA Administrator.
Petro’s appointment is unusual, as the typical choice for such a role would be someone at the headquarters level. The U.S. Senate confirmation process for Isaacman could take several weeks or months.
The Trump Administration initially aimed to return astronauts to the moon by 2024 but now expects this goal to be achieved no earlier than 2027.
During his inaugural address, President Trump expressed ambitious plans for exploring space, including sending American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on Mars.
