US President Donald Trump has appointed Bedford as the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) administrator, bringing over three decades of experience in aviation and executive leadership to the critical role.
Bedford will work with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to reform the agency, safeguard exports, and ensure the safety of nearly one billion annual passenger movements. The appointment comes after a deadly mid-air collision earlier this year drew attention to the FAA’s staffing shortages.
The Trump administration has faced criticism for its plan to reduce the federal workforce by firing less than 400 of the FAA’s 45,000 employees as part of a cost-cutting drive. The agency is now under heightened scrutiny following last month’s deadly helicopter-jet collision at Ronald Regan Airport in Washington, D.C.
To address safety concerns, employees from Elon Musk’s SpaceX will visit the FAA’s Air Traffic Control command center on Monday to suggest improvements.
