Trump Offers Softened Stance on Ukraine Support Amid Talks with Starmer

US President Donald Trump has offered a softer stance on US support for Ukraine amid talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House. During their meeting, Trump expressed trust in Russian leader Vladimir Putin to “keep his word” if a deal is reached with Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine.

Trump stated that Britain could “take care of themselves” if British peacekeeping troops were attacked by Russia, although he emphasized that the US would provide assistance if needed. The president also reiterated support for Article 5 of NATO but downplayed concerns about potential involvement in Ukraine’s security.

Starmer pressed for clear security guarantees from Putin and emphasized the importance of a lasting deal. Trump agreed to work with Ukraine on securing an agreement between Russia and Ukraine before discussing peacekeeping measures.

The comments come ahead of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s expected visit to Washington to sign a proposed agreement enabling US access to Ukraine’s critical minerals and other resources.
