Trump Orders FCC Investigation into Disney Over Diversity Policies

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr has launched an investigation into Walt Disney Co. and its ABC television network over concerns about their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The probe comes as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to scrutinize media companies for promoting what it sees as “invidious forms” of DEI discrimination.

Carr’s investigation follows reports that Disney has made policy changes, including eliminating a website highlighting underrepresented communities and softening warnings about movies with negative depictions. The FCC commissioner cited examples from several years ago, including a policy requiring 50% of characters in TV pilots to be from underrepresented groups.

The investigation is the latest move by the Trump administration to target DEI efforts across media and private organizations. Carr has been pushing the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) into an activist role since becoming its leader, with ongoing investigations into ABC, CBS, and NBC News.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement that the company was reviewing the letter from Carr and looking forward to answering questions. The FCC’s actions come as President Trump has been critical of media companies’ coverage of his administration’s policies, including a dispute over how to refer to the Gulf of Mexico.
