US President Donald Trump has ordered every federal agency to stop using technology from AI developer Anthropic immediately. The move comes after the company refused demands to give the US military unfettered access to its AI tools, leading to a label as a “supply chain risk”. This makes Anthropic the first US company to receive such treatment.
Anthropic had grown concerned about the government potentially using its AI tools for “mass surveillance” and “fully autonomous weapons”. The company’s CEO, Dario Amodei, said being designated a supply chain risk would be “legally unsound” and set a dangerous precedent.
Trump has stated that Anthropic’s tools will be phased out of all government work over the next six months. Companies that contract with the military may also have to stop using Anthropic for work done on behalf of the department.
