Trump Orders GSA to Terminate Thousands of Federal Office Leases

President Donald Trump’s administration is using the General Services Administration (GSA) to cut down on federal office space, with a goal of terminating leases on around 7,500 offices nationwide. The move seems to contradict Trump’s own return-to-office mandate for federal employees, adding confusion to the GSA’s efforts to find workspace, internet connections, and office building security credentials.

The order is part of a broader effort by President Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to reduce government spending and fire or encourage thousands of federal employees to resign. The GSA manages federal property for various agencies, including procurement of workplaces for over 1 million federal civilian workers.

As part of the plan, regional managers received an email instructing them to begin terminating leases on federal offices, with a goal of terminating as many as 300 leases per day. The initiative is being led by Nicole Hollander, who has been embedded in the GSA’s headquarters in recent days.

The move has sparked confusion among federal employees and experts, given Trump’s own return-to-office mandate for federal workers. It also reflects the administration’s efforts to reduce office space and promote “beautiful federal civic architecture” as preferred over traditional styles.

This marks the latest development in the Trump administration’s pursuit of changes with other federal agencies, using the GSA as a key tool in its efforts.
