President Donald Trump has called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to move swiftly to prosecute several of his political opponents, including James and Comey. This is a rare attempt by Trump to override traditional firewalls between the White House and the Justice Department.
Trump claims that he cannot delay prosecution any longer, citing his reputation and credibility as being at risk. He also announced plans to nominate Lindsey Halligan, a former personal lawyer, to be the U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Halligan has no prior experience as a prosecutor and is tasked with removing “improper ideology” from the Smithsonian Institution. Trump praised her for being fair, smart, and committed to providing justice for all.
The decision not to pursue charges against James and Comey was made by U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert, who resigned after eight months in office. His resignation came amid pressure from within the agency and external calls for his termination.
Siebert’s departure has created uncertainty about the leadership of the Alexandria-based office, which is now led by an acting U.S. attorney, Mary Cleary.
