Trump Orders Strikes on Iran’s Leadership Amid Tensions Over Nuclear Program

President Donald Trump demonstrated a dramatic shift in risk tolerance when he ordered military strikes against Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Just eight months ago, Trump was cautious about using American military might to confront Tehran’s clerical rule.

In June, Israel urged the US to deploy B-2 bombers to target three key Iranian nuclear sites. However, Trump rejected the plan due to concerns it would destabilize the region. Instead, he issued thinly veiled threats against Khamenei but ultimately backed down.

This time, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered targeted strikes on Iran’s leadership, including Khamenei. The President announced his death on social media hours after launching the operation. Iranian state media reported Khamenei’s death without elaborating on a cause.

Trump had pursued talks with Iran for months, but officials said Tehran wanted enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon, not peaceful civilian use. The US had offered free nuclear fuel in perpetuity, but Iran refused.

Trump’s decision to launch strikes was influenced by past provocative actions against Iran and the country’s refusal to address its ballistic missile program. He also seemed emboldened by his success in capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro earlier this year.

The operation marked a significant shift in Trump’s approach to Iran, from caution to bold action.
