US President Donald Trump has taken an interest in updating his Air Force One, reportedly pushing for a modern aircraft that can outperform those used by other nations. In 2018, Trump signed a $3.9 billion deal with Boeing for two Boeing 747-8s to be converted into VIP transport planes.
Boeing CEO Robert Kelly Ortberg acknowledged the President’s frustration, stating that he is working with Elon Musk to expedite delivery of the VC-25B. However, the conversion process is complex and requires installing advanced features such as a secure communication system, aerial refueling capability, and a special Presidential suite.
Other nations, including China and South Korea, have already upgraded their Air Force One fleets with faster and more efficient aircraft. The US may soon follow suit, with Boom Supersonic CEO Blake Scholl indicating that his company is ready to deliver a safe and supersonic Air Force One based on the Overture model.
Scholl emphasized the importance of safety culture, stating that it is a key factor in his company’s success. He also highlighted Boom Supersonic’s innovative technology, including “Boomless Cruise,” which enables supersonic flights without an audible sonic boom.
As pressure mounts on Boeing to deliver a modern Air Force One, some analysts predict that the US may shift towards sustainable aviation fuels-powered aircraft like the Boom Overture. With Trump’s endorsement, the stage is set for a potential upgrade in the nation’s VIP transport fleet.
