Trump Proposes $163 Billion Budget Cut

US President Donald Trump has proposed a $163 billion cut to the federal budget next year, which would sharply reduce spending on education, housing, and medical research. The plan aims to boost defense and border security spending by nearly 65% from 2025 enacted levels. Critics argue that the cuts will harm services needed by working Americans.

The proposal includes significant reductions in non-defense discretionary spending, excluding massive programs like Social Security and Medicare. This would cut $2 billion from the Internal Revenue Service and reduce budgets for the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by more than 40%.

Trump’s first budget since reclaiming office aims to slash federal bureaucracy while increasing funding for border security. Congressional Democrats have strongly opposed the plan, with Senator Chuck Schumer calling it an “all-out assault on hardworking Americans.”

The administration believes that Republican lawmakers will support increased defense spending as part of the tax-cut bill process, which is expected to pass on a party-line vote. The White House has also proposed additional funding for border security and technology, as well as staffing increases for border agencies.

Lawmakers may make significant changes to the budget request, but Trump’s influence over Republican lawmakers could lead to much of what he seeks being implemented.
