The US government released thousands of records related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Tuesday, following an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump in 2020. The release includes approximately 80,000 pages of previously classified documents that will be published with no redactions.
Many of these documents have already been disclosed, including a large batch released during the Biden administration. However, many of the newly released records were previously redacted. Researchers may need to wait some time before they can thoroughly review the newly posted 1,123 documents, which are identified only by record numbers and no descriptions.
Experts say that while there may be some new information, it’s unlikely to reveal any major bombshells. Tom Samoluk, a former deputy director of the Assassination Records Review Board, stated that if the records were significant enough to change the conclusion on Kennedy’s assassination, they would have been released in the 1990s.
The National Archives is working with the Justice Department to unseal additional documents withheld under court seal or for grand jury secrecy. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said that while there may be some surprises, it’s unlikely that the records will reveal anything new about Kennedy’s assassination.
Kennedy’s assassination has fueled conspiracy theories over the years, but experts warn that researchers should temper their expectations and be prepared to learn more about other topics related to the assassination. The release of these records is part of a broader effort to provide transparency and accountability on government actions surrounding the event.
