Trump Renews ’51st State’ Offer to Canada After Justin Trudeau’s Resignation

US President-elect Donald Trump has renewed his offer to make Canada the 51st state of the US, hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation. Trudeau stepped down amid mounting pressure from his ruling Liberal Party, citing declining popularity.

Trump has long suggested the idea of making Canada a US state, claiming it would help eliminate trade deficits and subsidies that benefit Canada. He tweeted on Truth Social, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat.”

The president-elect also claimed that merging with the US would provide security from Russian and Chinese threats, as well as reduce tariffs and taxes. However, Canada has received little reaction to his proposal.

Trump’s threat to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports if Toronto fails to stop illicit drug and migrant smuggling remains unchanged. His offer comes despite a strained relationship with Trudeau, whom he has mocked as “Canada’s governor.”
