Trump Retreats to Mar-a-Lago as President-Elect

US President-elect Donald Trump spent his first week behind closed doors at his private club in Florida, Mar-a-Lago. Unlike previous transitions, he’s kept a low profile and instead worked the phones, reconnected with foreign leaders, and built his administration.

Trump is surrounded by advisers, friends, and club members who provide advice on top government jobs. Elon Musk has been a constant presence, with some seeing him as Trump’s second-most influential figure after campaign chief-turned-chief of staff Susie Wiles.

Trump plans to return to public view on Wednesday, when he’ll meet with President Joe Biden at the White House and visit Capitol Hill. He’s laying the groundwork for his second presidency faster than his first.

In a private process, Trump is meeting with Republicans to prepare for his administration. Candidates have been vetted through PR agencies and lobbyists, and positions are being offered quickly. This time around, allies have spent four years preparing personnel lists and policy proposals.

Trump has also made several high-profile appointments, including Stephen Miller as a policy adviser and Tom Homan as “border czar.” Musk has attempted to influence Trump’s decisions on issues beyond his expertise, such as border security and military assistance to Ukraine.
