US President Donald Trump has shifted his stance on Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing frustration with his actions in Ukraine. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has strained their relationship, with Trump refusing to mince his words when asked about Putin.
Trump’s comments during a Cabinet meeting on July 8, where he said he was fed up with Putin and eyed imposing new sanctions, indicate a change in the dynamics between the two leaders. Trump has been critical of Russia’s lack of cooperation on a ceasefire and its continued drone and missile attacks on Ukraine.
The White House announced that Trump would sign off on “severe tariffs” against Russia if Moscow failed to agree to a peace deal within 50 days, with the deadline later reduced to 10-12 days. This move has put pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table.
However, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Trump responded by disclosing two US Navy submarines would be positioned in response to escalating threats from Russia, which could influence adversary behavior.
Despite tensions, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin on Wednesday, and the two leaders are expected to meet face-to-face soon. However, experts remain skeptical about the outcome of these meetings, with some believing that Putin may use them to placate Trump while continuing to assault Ukraine.
The White House has declined to disclose details regarding potential Friday sanctions, but said that Trump wants to meet with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to resolve the conflict.
