Trump Threatens 10% Tariffs on BRICS Countries over Anti-US Policies

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his threat to impose a 10% tariff on imports from the BRICS group of developing nations, warning that the group would collapse quickly if it formed meaningfully. The BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, among others, presents itself as a haven for multilateral diplomacy, with leaders rejecting Trump’s claim that they are anti-American.

Trump’s comments come amid divisions within major economies’ forums like G7 and G20, which have been hindered by the US president’s “America First” approach. The BRICS group is advancing work on a cross-border payment system, known as BRICS Pay, to facilitate trade and financial transactions in local currencies.

The US has taken aim at Brazil specifically, announcing a 50% tariff rate on its imports starting in August, and launching an investigation into what Washington calls “unfair” trading practices. Trump’s remarks have been met with skepticism by the BRICS group’s leaders, who deny being anti-American.
