US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese imports in response to Beijing’s new export curbs on rare earths, sparking defiance from the Chinese government. Beijing has warned it will retaliate with “corresponding measures” if Trump follows through on his threat.
The dispute began when China restricted exports of rare earths, essential for US manufacturers, as a response to what it described as “discriminatory” trade curbs by the US. The US has responded with tariffs linked to China’s role in the opioid crisis and blocked access to advanced computer chips.
Beijing dismissed Trump’s concerns as “classic case of ‘double standards'” and accused the US of trying to harm its economy. The Chinese government said it will not engage in tariff wars, but is prepared to fight if necessary.
The threat of resuming tit-for-tat tariffs has raised concerns about inflationary pressures and spooked shippers and retailers ahead of the holiday shopping season.
