The Trump administration is freezing over $2 billion in federal funding for Harvard University, citing concerns about antisemitism on campus. The move comes after the university rejected demands from the administration to address what it describes as “sick” ideologies. Harvard officials have countered that they will not compromise their independence or constitutional rights.
President Trump has threatened to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status and cut all federal funding if the university does not take action. However, the IRS rules governing tax-exempt organizations dictate that excessive lobbying activity can lead to loss of exempt status. Trump also claims that Harvard is “teaching hate” and should lose its federal funding.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has accused Harvard of engaging in “illegal discrimination” against Jewish American students. She claimed the university has broken federal law by failing to protect students from harassment.
In response, former President Barack Obama praised Harvard for standing up to the administration’s demands, saying it set an example for other universities to prioritize academic freedom and respect. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) also criticized the university, claiming there is “nearly zero ideological diversity” at Harvard.
Other public figures, including Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, have defended Harvard, calling Trump’s stance “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”
