Trump Threatens Tariffs on European Wine Amid US Whiskey Tiff

US President Donald Trump’s trade war with Europe has spilled into the alcohol sector, with threats of massive tariffs on European wine and champagne. The U.S. imposes 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, prompting a countermeasure from the European Union to impose 50% tariffs on American whiskey starting April 1.

The move is expected to affect the US hospitality industry, which sells billions of dollars in European wine every year and supports thousands of jobs. Alcohol and hospitality groups have expressed opposition to the tariffs, urging Trump to “get us back to zero-for-zero tariffs” to create U.S. jobs and increase manufacturing and exports.

However, some experts argue that American consumers may not abandon French bubbly for cheaper alternatives. Mark Wenzel, a winemaker from Illinois, claims that his wines are of high quality and have gained recognition, including being used by former first lady Michelle Obama.

Wenzel’s wines, sold at local establishments like Daisies and The Publican, showcase the quality of Illinois-made sparkling wine. With products like Brut Ombre Rosé and Ensemble, Wenzel is confident that American consumers will prefer his wines over cheaper alternatives.

The US-based Distilled Spirits Council also urges Trump to reconsider the tariffs, citing their negative impact on U.S. jobs and exports. As the trade war escalates, it remains to be seen whether American wine enthusiasts will opt for quality Illinois-made sparkling wine or stick with French imports.
