Trump to Dissolve Education Department Amid Controversy Over Diversity Programs

US President Donald Trump plans to dissolve the US Department of Education through an executive action in February, which would require congressional approval. The move comes amid controversy over diversity programs at schools.

Trump nominated Denise Carter as acting secretary and Linda McMahon, a longtime supporter of his administration, to lead the department permanently. However, her confirmation process has been delayed due to paperwork issues.

The Department of Education provides funds to local entities to support schools and oversees federal student aid and loan programs, which handle over $1 trillion in outstanding loans. If dissolved, another government agency may take over oversight of these programs.

Trump’s proposal would shift the focus from the federal government to states and localities, with Trump stating his desire to “move schools back to the states” and reduce federal involvement.
