US President Donald Trump is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday over a potential peace deal in Gaza, following a recent ceasefire with Iran. The 60-day truce, which includes the release of 10 live Israeli hostages and 18 deceased ones, aims to ease tensions and pave the way for a bigger agreement.
Netanyahu has expressed willingness to negotiate, but his government’s stance on post-war governance is at odds with the Trump administration’s goals. Israel wants Arab countries to control Gaza and provide security, while Netanyahu opposes any involvement of the Palestinian Authority.
The US side seeks an understanding on who will govern Gaza without Hamas and what security guarantees will prevent the group’s return. Fresh talks between Israeli and Hamas negotiators, along with Qatari and Egyptian mediators, have brought some momentum to the ceasefire discussions.
Trump hopes the deal will be a stepping stone toward a bigger peace agreement, but Netanyahu has been cautious in his approach. The meeting at the White House on Monday evening will focus on the “day after” issues, including governance and security guarantees.
The Trump administration is under pressure to deliver a breakthrough in Gaza, following its success in brokering a ceasefire with Iran.
