Trump to Take Oath in US Capitol’s Rotunda for First Time

US President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in as president in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, a location where some of his supporters rioted on January 6, 2021. The ceremony has been moved under the building’s dome due to forecasted bitter cold, marking the first time in four decades that the Oath of Office will be taken there.

On January 6, 2021, rioters clashed with police and caused significant damage, estimated at $1.5 million, to the Capitol building. The incident led to a tumultuous trial for Trump, who was ultimately acquitted by the Senate. Former US Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died after fighting with rioters on that day and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

The Rotunda has been the site of several significant events in recent years, including the January 6, 2021, riot and Trump’s return to the Capitol for a ceremony honoring former President Jimmy Carter. This year’s inauguration ceremony will mark a new chapter in the history of the US Capitol, with Trump taking the Oath of Office in this historic location.
