Trump to Unveil New Tariffs on Semiconductors and Chips Next Week

US President Donald Trump plans to announce new tariffs on semiconductors and microchips as soon as next week, citing the need for domestic production. The vast majority of advanced semiconductors come from Taiwan, where major chipmaker TSMC is based. Global demand for these technologies has increased significantly due to their widespread use in various sectors.

Taiwanese goods, including those from TSMC, will face an updated tariff of 20% starting this week, down from a previously threatened 32%. Trump’s remarks also suggested that tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals could reach up to 250%, although he had initially set the limit at 200%.

The announcement comes after Trump signed an executive order imposing new US duties on imports from multiple countries. The move aims to support domestic production and is part of a broader strategy to promote American industries.
