US President Donald Trump has deputized billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to push Boeing into delivering new Air Force One jets, a project marred by PR nightmares and technical issues. The president wants Musk to take drastic measures, such as reducing security clearance standards for those working on the planes.
Trump is reportedly unhappy with flying in old presidential planes that date back to George H.W. Bush’s term. He has pushed for new planes with a patriotic color scheme, despite concerns over thermal issues and dark blue paint.
The project was supposed to be ready by 2024 but now faces delays due to various setbacks, including security clearance lapses and supply chain issues. Musk has been in conversation with Boeing’s leadership since Trump’s election.
Musk is considering lowering the high security clearance level required for the project, which would make it easier for Boeing to find workers but raises potential national security risks. The Pentagon has expressed concerns about cutting corners on safety.
Trump has also considered finding an alternative luxury jet to use in the meantime. Musk recently visited Boeing’s facility in Texas and discussed ways to expedite production.
