President-elect Donald Trump is set to visit the historic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris this weekend to attend its reopening after the 2019 fire. During his appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel, Trump was jokingly asked about his plans for the cathedral and responded by saying he would like to buy it and turn it into a casino.
Kimmel made light of Trump’s previous statements about responding to fires, specifically referencing a 2017 tweet where Trump suggested using water tanks to put out a fire. The comedian poked fun at Trump’s perceived intelligence, saying “That’s why he’s a genius” and comparing the French president, Emmanuel Macron, to him.
Additionally, Kimmel joked that Trump is jealous of Macron because he can button his suit jacket without needing extra padding. He also noted that Trump’s wife Melania will enjoy her trip to Paris.
Other late-night comedians joined in on the joke, with Jimmy Fallon saying Trump’s visit might cause the cathedral to burst into flames and Stephen Colbert describing the opening ceremonies as featuring massive pyrotechnics and a fire-eater.
