US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire for Elon Musk to remain on his team “as long as possible.” This comes amid reports that Musk’s role as a “special government employee” with the Department of Justice (DOGE) is set to expire soon.
Musk’s 130-day timeframe, which began on Inauguration Day, would have expired on May 30. However, Trump has indicated that he wants Musk to stay, saying “I like smart people, and he’s a smart person.” He also noted that Musk can stay at the White House “as long as he’d like” and that he personally wants him to stay “as long as possible.”
Trump added that there will be a point at which time Elon’s going to have to leave, but did not provide a specific date. The president suggested that Musk could be appointed to a different post to keep him around longer.
Upon Musk’s departure, the secretaries within Trump’s cabinet will take over the work he has been doing with DOGE. Trump described the work as “horrible” and “incredible,” but declined to provide further details.
The role of “special government employee” was created in 1962 to permit temporary hires for short-term initiatives. Musk’s work with DOGE began after Trump signed an executive order establishing the office on January 20.
