Russia has welcomed the spat between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, raising hopes that the US may cut off military aid to Ukraine. The disastrous Oval Office meeting on Friday has cast doubt over future US-Ukraine relations.
The Kremlin views the White House encounter as proof of Zelenskyy’s reluctance to negotiate a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin’s statements about Kyiv’s refusal to hold peace talks have been proven true.
Moscow’s hawkish officials, including Deputy Head of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have also praised Trump’s tough stance on Zelenskyy. They claim that European allies are trying to prolong the conflict and suggest a rift between the US and its European partners could erode NATO and EU influence.
Peskov emphasized that Moscow will continue negotiations with Washington on normalizing ties but remains committed to achieving its goals in Ukraine. The Kremlin has warned Europe that it lacks resources to replace US military aid, potentially paving the way for further conflict.
