Trump’s Changes to DC: A Threat to Architectural Splendor?

President Donald Trump is making significant changes to the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. While some of these changes may be seen as cosmetic, they have raised concerns among preservationists and architecture experts.

Trump’s urban interventions in D.C.’s built environment include demolishing parts of the White House, renovating the Rose Garden, and planning a major renovation of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Other planned changes include building a 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery and creating a sculpture park near the National Mall.

Past presidents have made similar changes to D.C.’s historic core, but Trump’s disregard for design review processes has drawn criticism from many in the preservation community. Critics argue that his changes could irreparably damage the city’s architectural heritage.

In an interview with The Washington Post, architecture critic Philip Kennicott discussed Trump’s changes and their potential impact on D.C.’s beauty.
