Trump’s Chip Threat Leaves Taiwan Strained

US President-elect Donald Trump is putting pressure on Taiwan’s chip industry, which could lead to a showdown with the island nation. The Dutch company ASML is facing export restrictions from Joe Biden’s administration, and now Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the country’s top chipmaker, is in the crosshairs.

Kuo Chih-hui, Taiwan’s minister of economic affairs, has stated that the government must ensure domestic tech companies produce advanced chips locally. If TSMC produces 2-nanometre chips abroad, it could be forced to do so ahead of schedule in Arizona due to US regulations.

The Taiwanese government is concerned that its chip industry may lose control over critical technology. As a result, Kuo has vowed to enforce domestic regulations to protect Taiwan’s tech interests.
