The Trump administration has acknowledged that its cost-slashing initiative, DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), no longer operates as a centralized organization but claims to still follow its core principles. In an attempt to push back on reports claiming the department was disbanded, officials stated that the “principles” of DOGE remain intact, including deregulation and reducing waste.
However, after DOGE spent months reorganizing the government by laying off thousands of employees and canceling contracts, it remains unclear what form the initiative operates under. The US Department of Government Efficiency (USDOE) claims President Trump’s executive order is still in effect, but questions remain about its organizational structure.
Initially spearheaded by tech billionaire Elon Musk, DOGE has operated in an opaque manner, making it difficult to determine its operations and whether it delivered on promised savings. Many employees were embedded in agencies across the federal government with limited work periods. It’s unclear how many current employees remain, who reports to whom, or what form of organizational structure it now takes.
DOGE claims to have saved $214 billion as of October 4 through asset sales, contract cancellations, and other measures. However, its calculations have been disputed in the past, adding to the uncertainty surrounding this initiative.
