A federal executive order signed by President Donald Trump has halted negotiations on a New Jersey offshore wind project, bringing the state’s plans to a standstill. The order, issued on Trump’s first day back in office, banned offshore wind leasing and called for a review of the government’s permitting practices.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy had championed the offshore wind industry as a key part of achieving energy independence and creating cost-effective energy solutions. However, with energy giant Shell pulling out of the deal, the state has decided not to award its fourth offshore wind solicitation, effectively pausing further development.
Murphy expressed his support for the decision but appealed to the Trump administration to partner with New Jersey on reducing costs for consumers, promoting energy security, and creating jobs. As a term-limited governor, Murphy’s legacy may be impacted by the halt in offshore wind projects during his administration.
