US President-elect Donald Trump is using “trash talk” to revitalize the worst of world politics, sending messages to nations that are small, pro-American, or allied with veiled threats and boasts of American power. While he claims not to intend any actual invasion or annexation, his words put psychological pressure on foreign leaders and could destabilize them.
The strategy appears to be aimed at spheres of influence, a concept that aligns with Trump’s vision for “peace through strength.” However, this approach is problematic, as it disregards principles enshrined in international law. In the case of Panama, the US built and managed the canal before giving it to Panama, but now seeks to regain control due to China’s growing presence.
Greenland and Canada are also targeted, with Trump suggesting that the US should buy Greenland or annex Canada, despite their autonomy as an independent territory and country. The moves seem driven by a desire for strategic resources and access to the Arctic, which is becoming increasingly important geopolitically.
Trump’s behavior resonates with the historical norm in international affairs, known as anarchy, where great powers vie for influence. However, smaller nations should be cautious, as Trump has shown no willingness to defend vulnerable countries like Ukraine or Taiwan.
The use of trash talk by US leaders can have serious consequences, making medicine sick. As a global leader, it is essential that the US prioritizes diplomacy and cooperation over aggressive rhetoric and actions.
