US President Donald Trump once touted marine aquaculture as a key to boosting America’s seafood economy, but industry leaders now question the nation’s ability to support their sector due to staffing cuts and policy changes. The US fisheries agency, NOAA, has canceled major event appearances, suspended a research grant in Maine, and shelved an advisory panel that included industry representatives.
The East Coast Shellfish Growers Association represents nearly 90 shellfish growers on the Atlantic Coast, who are concerned about the impact of these cuts. “We’re writing letters right and left about the devastating impact of these cuts to all the programs that support aquaculture,” said Bob Rheault, executive director of the association.
