Kash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, has proposed a series of radical changes to the agency. Patel, a longtime Trump supporter and former congressman, wants to overhaul the FBI in ways that would significantly alter its role and operations.
Patel has suggested shutting down the FBI’s headquarters building and dispersing its employees across the country. He also plans to find and “chase down” those he believes are conspirators within the government and media. Additionally, Patel calls for major surveillance reform under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which would limit the bureau’s ability to collect communications of non-Americans without a warrant.
Patel has expressed his disdain for current Justice Department policy that prohibits prosecutors from seizing journalists’ records in leak investigations. He also advocates reducing the size of the intelligence community, including the CIA and National Security Agency.
The proposed reforms have raised concerns among lawmakers and experts, who question Patel’s qualifications and intentions. Critics argue that his plans would undermine the FBI’s ability to combat terrorism and spies.
