President Donald Trump’s pick for the top Pentagon policy job, Elbridge Colby, faced criticism from Democrats during his confirmation hearing today for refusing to state that Russia invaded Ukraine. Despite previously stating that the invasion was “an evil act by the Russians,” Colby sidestepped questions on the topic, citing the sensitivity of ongoing peace negotiations led by Trump.
Colby’s reluctance to assign blame came after a disastrous meeting between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last week. The meeting ended in a public argument over Ukraine’s gratitude for US military aid.
Colby has advocated that the US prioritize its resources against China over its involvement in Europe, including Ukraine. He stated that the US must have military capabilities in Asia to defend Taiwan and maintain its ability to conduct local defense at an acceptable cost.
Despite his noninterventionist stance on the Middle East, Colby defended Trump’s actions on Ukraine, calling the president a “deal maker” who can negotiate effectively. However, some Republicans have questioned his record on the issue, with only two GOP senators asking pointed questions about his position on Iran.
The Senate Armed Services Committee voted to advance Colby’s nomination, paving the way for his confirmation in the full Senate.
