President Donald Trump is pushing the boundaries of Republican support with his supercharged “Make America Great Again” agenda, which includes tearing down government agencies and expanding presidential power. While some Republicans have voiced dissent, many are marching in lockstep behind him.
Trump has proposed a series of ambitious policies, including trade wars with Mexico and Canada, seizing control of Gaza, and taking over Greenland. He is also pursuing state ownership of social media companies and closing the US Agency for International Development.
Despite concerns from some Republicans, such as Sen. Tom Cotton, who urged Trump to reconsider stripping security protection from former government officials, many party members are defending the president’s actions. “Loyalty” is seen as a vital part of running a country by some Republicans, including Sen. Kevin Cramer.
Polling shows that voters are increasingly opposed to expanding tariffs and American intervention overseas. However, Republican voters still largely favor these policies.
The White House claims that Trump’s agenda is within his authority, citing the Constitution’s Article 1, which gives Congress the power to collect taxes and provide for the defense of the country.
However, Democrats are struggling to curtail Trump’s power grabs and are appealing to Republicans to join their cause. They argue that Trump’s actions threaten the balance of power in Washington and need to be challenged by members of both parties.
The Republican Party has maintained a united front behind Trump, with House Speaker Mike Johnson saying “we see this as an active, engaged, committed executive branch authority doing what the executive branch should do.”
