US President Donald Trump recently stated that his tariffs are generating “trillions of dollars” in revenue. According to Treasury Department data released on Tuesday, the US has collected $142 billion from tariff revenue so far this fiscal year. This number is lower than estimated by some economists, who predict that Trump’s levies will generate around $2.5 trillion over the next decade.
The tariffs have been in effect since April and have generated approximately $96 billion in revenue so far. However, these costs are eventually passed on to US consumers when they adjust prices to offset or absorb the effects of tariffs.
Economists expect Trump’s tariffs to raise common goods and taxes by nearly $1,300 in 2025 and $1,700 in 2026. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that Trump’s tariffs will generate $2.8 trillion to the US gross domestic product by fiscal year 2034.
Despite this, inflation remains a concern, with core consumer prices rising 3.1% year-over-year in July. Some economists warn that Trump’s levies could lead to higher inflation and increased costs for consumers.
In response to the revenue generated by his tariffs, Trump has hinted at sending checks to eligible adults and dependent children. However, no plans have been finalized yet. A bill introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley proposes issuing rebate checks of up to $600 this year, depending on income levels.
