Three Republican lawmakers blocked President Donald Trump’s tariffs in a procedural vote in the House of Representatives, dealing a blow to the administration. The narrow margin exposed Mike Johnson’s vulnerability as he can only afford to lose one Republican vote to pass legislation.
While Republicans had sought to allow the Supreme Court time to review the matter, the trio of Thomas Massie, Don Bacon and Kevin Kiley broke party lines to join Democrats in sinking the vote.
GOP Rep. Don Bacon said tariffs have been a “net negative” for the economy and that Congress should reclaim its authority on taxes and tariffs from the executive branch. The Nebraska congressman also argued that the president’s trade policy should be given latitude.
In contrast, House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the challenge of maintaining unanimity in his slim-majority Republican group, stating that he needs all lawmakers to agree on every issue.
