A federal appeals court has temporarily halted President Donald Trump’s tariffs, restoring the president’s ability to impose the tariffs under emergency powers declared earlier this year. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit granted a stay, pending further review.
The decision reverses a ruling from the Court of International Trade on Wednesday that blocked the tariffs. The appeal was made by the Trump administration, which claims it has a strong case and will respond “forcefully.”
Other companies have expressed concerns about the impact of the tariffs on their businesses. A US District Court Judge recently issued a preliminary injunction protecting two family-owned toy companies from the tariffs, but postponed it for two weeks pending an appeal.
The Liberty Justice Center, which represented several small businesses suing to stop the tariffs, stated that they are confident the appeals court will deny the government’s motion and recognize the harm caused by the tariffs.
A whirlwind of decisions has added to the chaos around Trump’s economic policy. The Trump administration had announced the tariffs on April 2, targeting China, Mexico, and Canada, in an effort to combat fentanyl coming into the US.
The decision adds to uncertainty surrounding Trump’s tariffs, which have been a key pillar of his economic policy.
