US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has defended President Trump’s economic policies, saying they are worth it even if they lead to a recession. In an interview with CBS News, Lutnick stated that the policies produce revenues, growth, and factory builds in the US. He attributed potential economic downturns to “Biden nonsense” and claimed that countries negotiating with the US will eventually realize they can do business in a more respectful manner.
Lutnick also addressed concerns over Trump’s recent tariff announcements on Canada and China, stating that the 50% tariffs on aluminum and steel are no longer being pursued. The one- or two-day tariffs have their purpose, he argued, as they allow for shock value to prompt responses from trading partners. Lutnick denied any chaos in the way Trump has used tariffs to pressure US trading partners, saying it’s a matter of “letting the dealmaker make his deals.”
