US intelligence agencies have disputed President Donald Trump’s claims that Ukrainian troops are encircled in Russia’s Kursk region. Citing unnamed officials, these agencies say Ukraine’s forces are under pressure but not surrounded.
Trump had previously stated that thousands of Ukrainian troops were “completely surrounded by the Russian military” and in a vulnerable position. However, Ukraine’s General Staff denies these claims, stating they are false and used by Russia for political purposes.
The situation has led to increased tensions between Trump, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as negotiations for a ceasefire continue. Despite agreeing on a partial truce, the US demands a 30-day ceasefire that Ukraine did not accept.
Russia’s General Staff claims it is making progress in Kursk, recapturing territory from Ukrainian troops. Meanwhile, Trump and Putin held calls trying to secure the truce, with both sides accusing each other of violating agreements.
The conflict highlights concerns among Ukraine and its allies that Trump may be too sympathetic to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
