The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has banned cordless hair tools containing gas cartridges or butane from being checked in luggage, but these items are permitted in carry-on bags if they have safety covers.
Cordless curling irons or flat irons with gas cartridges and butane-fueled curling irons or flat irons are prohibited in checked baggage due to the risk of explosion. However, hair tools with cords are allowed in both checked and carry-on luggage.
Travelers who attempt to bring banned items through security checkpoints may have their luggage confiscated. The TSA has corrected its earlier statement on how these items would be handled, clarifying that they will not be confiscated.
Other items allowed by the TSA include live lobsters transported in clear containers, Christmas lights, cowboy spurs, antlers, Harry Potter wands and light sabers, coffee and espresso makers, magic 8 balls, sewing machines, and waffle irons.
