TSMC Delays Fab 21 Opening Ceremony in Arizona Until After Trump Takes Office

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reportedly delayed the opening ceremony of its Fab 21 near Phoenix, Arizona, from December 6 to late January or February after Donald Trump takes office. The decision was made due to caution over a stricter approach expected from the new administration.

The ceremony’s original planned date included attendees such as President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump, but it has been pushed back until January 22, 2025, when Trump is set to take office. This means that the event will likely not be attended by current U.S. President Biden or his administration.

TSMC plans to invest $65 billion in its Arizona Fab 21 campus, which includes three development phases. The company has received significant subsidies and loans to support the project. Phase 1 of Fab 21 is already producing chips for Apple using advanced fabrication technologies.

The delay reflects TSMC’s concerns over reduced subsidies and loan guarantees under a new Trump administration. However, the company has leverage due to its proprietary process technologies and production capacity, which are in high demand in the U.S. market.
