A tsunami warning has been canceled for Papua New Guinea after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the island nation on Saturday morning, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake was shallow and centered offshore, 194 km east of Kimbe town.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert initially, warning of waves up to 3 meters along parts of the Papua New Guinea coastline. However, the center later called off the alert after assessing the situation. There were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami waves affecting nearby Solomon Islands.
Approximately 500,000 people live on the island of New Britain, where the earthquake occurred. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there was no tsunami threat to the country.
