Turkey Drops Doner Kebab Label Bid Amid EU Resistance

Turkey has abandoned its bid to impose strict rules on European doner kebab shops, citing “large number of objections” from EU countries and industry groups. The proposed “Traditional Speciality Guaranteed” label would have restricted ingredients and cooking techniques for the popular dish. Germany’s kebab industry, which uses veal and has evolved into a unique European take on the Turkish classic, was particularly affected by the proposal. Turkey’s International Doner Federation argued that the doner should be viewed as a national dish spread through migration, but ultimately, EU officials deemed the bid too restrictive, leading to its withdrawal.
