A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, killing at least one person and causing more than a dozen buildings to collapse. At least 29 people were injured.
The epicenter was in the town of Sindirgi, sending shocks felt up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) away in Istanbul, where over 16 million people live. An elderly woman died after being rescued from debris in Sindirgi, while four others were freed from a collapsed building.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that 16 buildings collapsed, mostly derelict and unused. Two mosque minarets also fell down. None of the injured were seriously hurt.
Rescue teams searched for survivors in damaged buildings, asking people to remain silent so they can listen for signs of life beneath the rubble. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency warned citizens not to enter damaged structures due to aftershocks, including a 4.6-magnitude quake.
President Recep Tayip Erdogan issued a statement wishing affected citizens speedy recovery, saying “May God protect our country from any kind of disaster.”
