Turkey Hit by Strong 6.1-Magnitude Earthquake

A powerful earthquake struck Turkey on Sunday, measuring 6.1 magnitude according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake occurred at 7:53 p.m. local time, approximately 7 miles southwest of Bigadiç, Turkey.

Seismologists are reviewing data and may revise the reported magnitude as more information becomes available. The U.S.G.S. is also monitoring aftershocks in the region, which can occur days, weeks, or even years after the initial earthquake.

Aftershocks can be equal or larger in magnitude to the initial quake and continue to affect damaged areas. They are usually minor adjustments along a fault that slipped during the initial earthquake.

For context, earthquakes and aftershocks within 100 miles of the epicenter can occur days before, on, or after the initial quake. The U.S.G.S. provides maps and charts showing these events based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale.
