Turmeric and green tea among health supplements putting people in hospital
More than 15 million Americans may be risking liver damage by taking popular botanical supplements like turmeric, green tea, ashwagandha, Garcinia cambogia, black cohosh, and red yeast rice. Researchers from the University of Michigan studied over 9,000 people and found that nearly 4.7% had used one of these supplements in the past 30 days.
People took these supplements to manage issues like joint health, energy levels, weight loss, hot flashes, and heart health. While liver toxicity is not new, hospitalizations increased from 7% to 20% between 2004 and 2014. The researchers recommend users be vigilant with ingredients and dosages, especially when taking combinations or other medicines.
The lack of regulatory oversight on these supplements is concerning, as chemical testing has revealed inconsistencies in what’s advertised versus what’s actually in the tablets.
