Turmeric May Help with Type 2 Diabetes Weight Loss

Type 2 diabetes is a growing global health concern, affecting around 462 million people worldwide. The condition can cause obesity and weight gain due to poor blood glucose regulation. A recent study suggests that turmeric, or its active component curcumin, may help individuals with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes lose weight, reducing their need for costly medications.

The review of 20 randomized controlled trials found that turmeric/curcumin supplementation led to small but significant reductions in body weight, waist circumference, and fat mass percentage. These changes were approximately 2 kg (5 lbs) of weight loss and a reduction of 2-3 cm on the waist.

Turmeric has antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to its potential effects on weight loss. However, the precise mechanism remains unclear, and more research is needed to fully understand its benefits.

The study authors highlighted several limitations, including the fact that most of the studies were conducted in older female adults from Iran, which may limit the applicability to other populations. They also noted that there was a wide range of doses and forms of turmeric used, as well as varying study durations.

To address these issues, the researchers plan to conduct larger, longer-term trials focusing on high-absorption formulations and combinations with lifestyle interventions. For now, turmeric can be seen as a helpful addition to a healthy lifestyle for individuals with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, but it is not a shortcut to weight loss.
