A deadly vehicle incident in Las Vegas and another in New Orleans has raised questions about the safety of peer-to-peer car-sharing service Turo. In an interview with CNBC, CEO Andre Haddad said there were no “red flags” about the drivers involved. The attackers were reportedly decorated military members, and both had passed background checks before renting cars.
Turo uses a complex algorithm that considers over 50 data points to compile risk scores for its users. This has contributed to the company’s strong safety track record over the past four years. Haddad expressed his focus on cooperating with law enforcement and conducting investigations into the incidents.
The company claims that serious incidents, such as vehicle thefts, are rare, occurring in less than 0.10% of trips. With 350,000 active listings and 3.5 million “guest” renters across five countries, Turo says it has facilitated over 27 million trips and 8.6 billion miles driven.
Haddad emphasized his commitment to improving safety and reducing future incidents, citing the company’s strong trust and safety record.
